Party Report: American Psycho Opening Night

After the curtain fell at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on April 21, Broadway Style Guide spent the evening at Stage 38, where the opening night festivities were unfolding for American Psycho. Check out our play by play below.

10:55 p.m. – Walking down 45th Street, a group of men in suits pass by. They are reading the New York Times review on their iPhones and headed to the party.
11:07 p.m. – Arrive at Stage 48. There’s a sizable crowd gathered, but the line moves quickly. Inside, there are four levels: a dance floor and a disco ball on the first, a balcony overlooking the ground level from the second, the press room on the third, and a VIP area on the fourth. Every floor is equipped with bars.
11:22 p.m. – Speaking of bars, there’s also a bit of a wait at one of the three on the ground floor. (There had to be at least seven bars in total.) The themed drinks are made with Hiro Sake: Hard Body Hiro (Hiro Red and guava juice), Super Hiro (Hiro Blue and lychee juice), and Dorsia (Hiro Red, pineapple juice, and coconut water).
11:32 p.m. – The ground floor is starting to get crowded. In the theme of the show, huge monitors playing music videos everywhere.
11:36 p.m. – At least there’s food. Catering servers who look like male models circulate serving sliders, breaded mushroom risotto, and pesto meatballs.
11:40 p.m. – Star Benjamin Walker arrives at the press room, which is slowly becoming the gathering place for several partygoers and is getting crowded.
11:53 p.m. – Several original cast members of Spring Awakening are at the party. Psycho star Jennifer Damiano is in the cast, and Spring composer Duncan Sheik wrote the music and lyrics. Glee‘s Jenna Ushkowitz and Blake Daniel are spotted walking up to the third floor.
11:55 p.m. – Lindsay Mendez and Trip Cullman are chatting near one of the bars on the second floor. Krysta Rodriguez, who was in both the original and this season’s revival of Spring Awakening, and Benjamin Rauhula are hanging by the bar on the opposite side of the room.
12:27 a.m. – Up on the third floor, Benjamin Walker is still doing press, though he’s retreated into the back corner, where his wife, Kaya Scodelario is sitting. The couple talks among friends, while reporters wait nearby.
12:34 a.m. – The bottom two floors have pretty much cleared out, and the disco ball looks lonely. Everyone seems to be gathered in the upper areas, but it’s also getting late for a Thursday.
1:07 a.m. – Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” is playing on the monitors. A perfect song for a party exit.
