No one was more surprised than Mike Faist when his name was called as one of the nominees for a Tony Award for best featured actor in a musical for his performance in Dear Evan Hansen. In fact, Faist wasn’t even watching the announcement; he was at the grocery store, and when his agent called him to tell him about the nomination, he assumed it was in reference to the musical.
Faist plays the mysterious and misunderstood Connor Murphy in the Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, and Steven Levenson tuner about what happens when one anxious teenager life turns around through a school tragedy, a misunderstanding, and social media. He’s been with the show since it premiered at Arena Stage in Washington D.C. and Second Stage Off Broadway, and the character has grown around his talents.
“Over the past three years, I started the show in the role when I was 21 or 22, for me being okay with what I was able to bring to the process, that was really hard for me to do and very trying. And I questioned my own abilities throughout that time and Michael grief continued to believe in me probably when other people maybe didn’t, especially myself. If anything it’s taught me to be okay with myself.” Below, the Tony nominee answers Broadway Style Guide‘s rapid-fire questionnaire.
